The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ that sits in the lower centre part of the neck. It secretes thyroid hormone that regulates the body’s metabolism. Thyroid mass or nodules can occur in any part of the thyroid gland. Symptoms include feeling or seeing a lump near or at the centre of the neck, voice change, and difficulty in swallowing. An ultrasound scan of the neck is still the best method to image the thyroid and it is radiation-free.
